When Green Day announced they were turning their hit 2004 album 'American Idiot' into a musical, there was plenty of skepticism from the band's loyal fans, so-called punk purists and the theater community. But now, nearly a year after it premiered in Berkeley, Calif., the show is officially a smash.
Proving that punk rock and theater can coexist, the cast of 'American Idiot' recently dropped by AOL's New York studios for the first-ever Sessions taping by a stage troupe. After the performance, AOL sat down with the main cast -- John Gallagher, Jr., (Johnny), Stark Sands (Tunny), Michael Esper (Will), Rebecca Naomi Jones (Whatsername), Christina Sajou (the Extraordinary Girl), Libby Winters (Heather) and Tony Vincent (St. Jimmy) -- to discuss working with Green Day, the diverse audiences and how 'American Idiot' reflects an important era in US history.
