These are good days for
Weezer. More than 15 years since its formation, the band is having the biggest hit of its career with 'Pork and Beans.' That's saying a lot for a group that also brought us the indelibly catchy tunes 'Beverly Hills,' 'The Sweater Song,' 'Buddy Holly' and 'Hash Pipe' over the years.
Led by the enigmatic, reserved Rivers Cuomo, who has collected a degree from Harvard in English literature since the release of the band's last album, Weezer are reveling in their continued good fortune. That includes the No. 4 debut of their new (and third) self-titled album, dubbed "The Red Album" to distinguish it from the "Blue" and "Green" albums.
When asked about the secret behind writing a good power pop song, Cuomo seems to have the process down to a science. "It's different in different decades, but I think now the chorus has to be the best part of the songs," Cuomo tells AOL during the band's recent Sessions taping. "It's gotta be catchy. It's gotta be pretty short but not too short, like, just over 3 minutes is good. You gotta get to the chorus within a minute. For us, major keys are great and the tempo of at least 115 beats per minute."

Warped Tour veterans the Almost and Underoath are thanking their fans for their support by personally stuffing merchandise orders with handwritten notes and goodies such as broken drumsticks and guitar picks.
"Whether people agree with me or not, I think the biggest thing an artist controls today in the way we make money is merchandise," Almost guitarist and Underoath guitar tech Jay Vilardi tells AOL Music. "That's also the biggest medium that puts you in touch with the kids who want to hear you."
Vilardi founded
Audible Diversion Group with Underoath guitarist Tim McTague and filmmaker Ryan Gardner. The Web store features goods from both bands and Vilardi admitted it has become quite the undertaking.
"It's funny ... I guess we were short sighted with how many extra things we would need -- broken sticks, strings, picks," he says. "We wound up being so successful that we're running a little low. But we write a really personal letter like, 'You're buying our music and that's cool. You come to our shows and that's awesome. It's a pleasure just to have you guys. At the end of the day, as corny as it sounds, it's impossible to do what we do without you caring enough to wear our band names on your chest. That's the most important thing.' We hand sign every letter and we do these extra things."
The Almost is on tour through June 24, on a jaunt that Vilardi calls the band's last for 2008. The act released its debut album 'Southern Weather' last year and is currently writing new material for the follow-up.

Singer Katy Perry can now add "actress" to her resume as an entertainer. The young pop star, who had already made a splash with the singles 'Ur So Gay' and 'I Kissed a Girl,' appeared on the CBS daytime drama 'The Young and the Restless.' In the episode, Perry played herself posing for the cover of Restless Style magazine.
"They're saying 'Ooh, she's edgy,'" Perry tells AOL Music about her soap opera stint. "Yeah, I'm edgy!" At first she wasn't sure if this was her type of audience when she agreed to come on 'The Young and the Restless.' "Then I heard that Snoop Dogg did ['One Life to Live']," she says, "and I was like, 'If
Snoop Dogg's gonna do it, [then] he's my standard in life.'"
It's just another peg in the Santa Barbara, California native's emerging career as a pop music artist. Already 'I Kissed a Girl' has made it onto the Billboard Top Ten singles chart, and it's number two on iTunes' Top Songs. It also benefits Perry to be in good graces with gossip blogger Perez Hilton ("There's no white dots coming out of the side of my mouth," she jokingly refers to the usual 'graffiti' on the celebrity photos posted on Hilton' Web site). Most recently
Madonna raved about 'Ur So Gay.' "That's insane too," says Perry. "I'm like, 'What's going on? Who is paying these people?"
