Why He's About to Pop: Growing up, Pittsburgh Slim split his devotion between Run D.M.C. and Nirvana. Slim began rapping at the age of 12, all the while playing guitar in several post-punk bands. The eclecticism helped shape his unique sound which finds the Pennsylvania native laying smooth rhymes over mashed-up beats that sample everyone from Devo to Rihanna. This fresh spin caught the ear of rap mogul Jay-Z, who made the artist an offer he couldn't refuse. Now on Def Jam, Slim is releasing his debut album, 'Tastemaker,' which thoroughly spans his affinity for old-school hip-hop and rock. The first single, "Girls Kiss Girls,' is already making waves online for Slim's lyrical candor and, well, scintillating friends.
Three Questions with Pittsburgh Slim:
What inspired the songs on your record?
Honestly, my life is the inspiration for my music. That's how it should be.
What's your favorite song on the record?
My favorite song is 'Kiss and Tell.' I think it really captures what I'm about all in one song. From the beat to the hook to the rhymes; it's really the keystone of the album.
If you could have any musician's career other than your own, whose would it be?
Jimi Hendrix. To accomplish what he accomplished in basically a four-year span is unreal. The passion and talent he combined is still, to this day, unmatched, in my opinion. Of course, I will skip the untimely death.
