Esbjorn Svensson, June 14: The visionary Swedish pianist, beloved by fans worldwide for his efforts to marry rock-inspired electronics with traditional jazz, died while scuba diving near Stockholm. He was 44. His trio, E.S.T., had just completed their 12th album.

The statement, issued to Q107 in the band's native Toronto, does not mention a cause of death, but Rutsey had suffered from diabetes since his youth. He formed Rush along with bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson in 1968. Before long, the band gained a sizeable following in Canada before cutting their self-titled debut for Moon Records in 1974.

The album contained the band's first hit single, the blue collar anthem "Working Man." The song's driving riff pays tribute to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and contains one of Lifeson's more memorable solos. Guitar World magazine voted it the 94th best guitar solo ever.

Neil Peart replaced Rutsey soon after his departure, marking the band's transition from mainstream hard rockers to progressive torchbearers.

Little is known of Rutsey's whereabouts since leaving the group.

Q107 quotes a 1989 interview where Lifeson remarked that Rutsey "gave up playing [drums] shortly after he left the band and went into bodybuilding." He added his ex-bandmate "competed on an amateur level for a while, doing that for a few years, and has sort of been in and out of that, but he still works out."

im with fiv4fightin..... i have seen Rush every year since 1981, and I have never seen them open up for another band.... They are definitely in the same category as Zeppelin..... they played the same halls, sold the same amount of tickets...... anyone that was listening to one usually was listening to the other!!!!

I have seen RUSH every time they have played in Seattle since 1976, plus once in L.A. and most recently in Las Vegas (May 10,2008) the day before Rutsey passed. Of all these shows they were the headliner each time. So Aquila60,1would you mind letting us all in on your little secret? When did Rush open for another band and who were they?
Also, help me out here, how long has/was Led Zep together? Where can I purchase some of their new material? Are they playing anywhere other than on VH1 CLASSICS?

RIP John Rutsey. The first RUSH song I ever heard was "Working Man" - great song!

For those who wonder "Who the hell was RUSH?" - One of the greatest rock bands of all time, who makes music to this day. I just got "Snakes and Arrows Live", and it's great to listen to on long drives. Classic stuff mixed with new stuff.

Everybody has a band nowadays, but it is very unusual to have an impact such as Rush did. Like them or not, you have to respect the legacy. I pray that John now rest in the sweet loving arms of heaven, and thank them all from the bottom of my heart for their tremendous contribution to rock music.
