    The Sound

"People are quick to categorize me as R&B, hip-hop or urban because of the color of my skin, where I'm from, or the amount of bass in my music. For me, my music is universal. Every gender and ethnic background can relate to what I'm singing about. Even back in segregated times, it was the music that helped bring people together. I'm very grateful just to be doing it."

          'You'
"I recorded this song well over a year ago in my best friend and producer Reese's basement. My influences range from a lot of different genres like Beach Boys, Beastie Boys, 2Pac, Coldplay and the Beatles. I listen to a lot of old-school sounds to find something that I could customize and make my own. I knew that a lot of the older people would be able to relate because they hear [Spandau Ballet] and say 'Oh, I know that!' Most of the young kids probably never heard that, but I'm helping to school them on some old school."

          'My Valentine'
"Wally Morris, who produced 'Southside,' also did this song. It's one of the nicest songs I ever wrote. It's just real sweet. Even though I wrote it when I was 15, it's timeless. I don't wanna make music for just six months, a year, or for what's hot right now. Every song is my favorite when I do it."

          'Get It Shawty'
"I recorded this at Usher's house with his younger brother, J-Lack. He's an incredible producer. One day, Jazze Pha brought him over to the studio I was recording at, and immediately I fell in love with one of his songs. I recorded one and liked it, but he accidentally played another one. I said 'No, I gotta have that one. That's the one for me.' It's very uptempo. It makes you wanna dance."

          'You (Remix)'
"Andre 3000 and Nas are two of the greatest storytellers of my generation, and for Dre to reach out and say 'I have to do a remix for Lloyd' means that the music is where it's supposed to be. Our biggest feat was finding someone who could follow him, 'cause he's incredible. Irv [Gotti] reached out to Nas, because they're already good friends. Nas said he was very familiar with the song and would love to get down."
