The Jesus & Mary Chain, 'Just Like Honey' ('Lost in Translation,' 2003)

We'll never know what Bill Murray whispers to Scarlett Johansson in the last scene of this subtle romance (set in anything-but-subtle Tokyo), but the hazy guitars and moody vocals of this shoegazer classic summed up the pair's pained emotions perfectly. Score another one for Sofia. -- MTC

The Knack, 'My Sharona' ('Reality Bites,' 1994)

The Knack's ode to cradle robbing inspired a spontaneous convenience-store dance party in Ben Stiller's slacker classic, proving just how much those Gen-Xers love their one-hit wonders. Surprisingly, Winona Ryder never dated anyone in the band. -- JP

Madonna, 'Into the Groove' ('Desperately Seeking Susan,' 1985)

The only thing that eluded Madge in the '80s was respect from Hollywood. It didn't help that her first dramatic role required her to do no acting at all, since "Susan" conveniently walked and talked exactly like ... Madonna. What range! It must have taken the costume designers ages to get her look just right. -- MTC

Sixpence None the Richer, 'Kiss Me' ('She's All That,' 1999)

When once-dorky Rachel Leigh Cook walked down the stairs and into the heart of oh-so-dreamy Freddie Prinze Jr., offbeat adolescents everywhere learned that if you tried hard enough, you can actually earn the love and admiration of preppy, superficial douchebags. -- KD

Harry Nilsson, 'Everybody's Talkin' ('Midnight Cowboy,' 1969)

The only X-rated movie ever to win the Best Picture Oscar, 'Midnight Cowboy' was a racy portrait of innocence lost and the heartbreak of hustling. Nilsson's cover of this easygoing folk song sets the mood, and makes the film even more harrowing. -- JP

Boy George, 'The Crying Game' ('The Crying Game,' 1992)

Drag queens the world over still tear up when they hear this this smoky torch song (originally recorded by Dave Berry). Good thing the producers didn't go with the film's original theme, 'Dude Looks Like a Lady.' -- MTC
