From denouncing the salacious, almost soft-porn 'Criminal' video that made her famous to occasionally storming off stage during her concerts, Fiona Apple raged against the pop-culture machine early in her career. When the volatile chanteuse took the stage at MTV's Video Music Awards to accept the prize for Best New Artist Video, she outdid herself. She blurted out profanity to millions of viewers, adding, "You shouldn't model your life on what we think is cool, what we're wearing and what we're saying."

The backlash was immediate: "Let's hear it for Fiona X!" host Chris Rock cracked, christening her with a moniker that still haunts her today.
