Chatter of the Week: Taylor Swift, Kid Rock + More

The Boot rounds up this week's most memorable quotes from country stars.

"I am obsessed with 'Grey's Anatomy' ... It's my life goal to get a guest-spot on that show. My love of 'Grey's Anatomy' has never wavered. It's my longest relationship to date." --Taylor Swift (Source: GAC)

"I needed two guys who play golf and two guys who play John Madden football -- that was my criteria for a band." --Darius Rucker on assembling his new band (Source: AOL Music Sessions)

"I was on a TV show and they called it 'Suddenly Sexy,' like I was all of a sudden sexy. I wouldn't necessarily have always called myself a lady killer, so it's kind of funny." --James Otto (Source: Dial-Global)

Whitney Duncan Presents 'Whit's Wit,' Episode 2

Last week, country newcomer (and funny lady) Whitney Duncan countrified the word "yonder." This week, in 'Whit's Wit' Episode 2, she gets a little more mechanical with her monologue.

Trace Adkins Performs for Troops

Trace Adkins has a no-nonsense attitude about the men and women who serve in this country's military. He supports them 100 percent, not just with words or songs like 'Arlington,' but in making trips to entertain the troops who are serving in various branches of the service.

Adkins will soon be headed to the Persian Gulf (protocol requires that specific dates not be announced) to perform for the soldiers as part of a USO/Armed Forces tour. The country crooner was never in the military and says he will always wonder what would have happened if he had made a different decision back when he was in college.

Travis Tritt: "I'm No Mariah Carey"

Travis Tritt may possess one of the most powerful, unique voices in country music, but don't bother trying to tell him that. What the Georgia native will admit he does have going for him is versatility.

"I can play just about any position on the field," Tritt recently told the Foster's Daily Democrat. "In my opinion, I'm not a home-run hitter. I'm not the kind of person I think who people say 'He's the greatest singer I've ever heard.' I don't have that kind of voice. That belonged to Ray Charles or a Mariah Carey, those kinds of people. I'm not someone considered the most prolific songwriter on the face of the planet like a Bob Dylan."

Obama Votes for Brooks and Dunn

Brooks and Dunn's 'Only in America' blasted over the loudspeakers Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention after Barack Obama concluded his history-making speech, accepting the Democratic nomination for president. Despite the nonpartisan, patriotic message of the hit country song, some may find it a bit of a surprising choice for Senator Obama. That's because the same song was used in President George W. Bush's 2004 re-election campaign. Brooks and Dunn were also supporters of the president, performing at a Republican rally the night before the 2004 election.

Still, the song was a natural fit to conclude Obama's speech, given its patriotic "dreams come true" message. Furthermore, it was co-written by Don Cook, a co-founder of an organization called the Music Row Democrats. And it's important to note that neither Brooks nor Dunn have come forward with their political preference for 2008.

Randy Houser Takes Special Request From David Letterman

Randy Houser is taking musical direction from ... David Letterman? The country newcomer performed an extended version of his hit single, 'Anything Goes,' on 'The Late Show With David Letterman' Thursday. He repeated the second verse and chorus, upon Letterman's special request.

"Another morning after a crazy night before, I'm searchin' for my blue jeans on a stranger's bedroom floor / Well, shouldn't I feel guilty, well I don't feel a thing / I'd wake her up and say goodbye, but I can't recall her name," Houser sang in the second verse and again at the end of the song, nailing every note.

"The story of my life!" Letterman proclaimed after the performance.

Faith Hill, Jessica Simpson Bashed for Covers

Entertainment Weekly's PopWatch readers have compiled a list of the 20 Worst Cover Songs Ever, and not surprisingly, country artists were included. Coming in at both the No. 1 and No. 2 slot is country's newest star, Jessica Simpson. First, for her cover of the Berlin classic, 'Take My Breath Away,' and then for her remake of the Robbie Williams hit, 'Angels,' both of which were included on the Collector's Edition of her 2003 album, 'In This Skin.'

"Reminds of that scene in 'Jaws' when the drunk sea captain gets the town's attention by scratching his nails down the blackboard -- which sounds 1000 percent more pleasant than this cover," writes one reader of Simpson's 'Take My Breath Away.'

Darius Rucker Says Hootie is on Hiatus

Hootie has flown the coop -- at least for now -- according to Hootie & the Blowfish lead singer Darius Rucker.

"Hootie played our last show last night for years," said Rucker Wednesday during an AOL Music Sessions taping. "We have four charity gigs that we do every year and will still do every year. But we will not do a record or tour for five or six years ... until I do three or four country records."

Rucker is an out-of-the-box success at country radio. His first single, the bittersweet 'Don't Think I Don't Think About It' is No. 5 at country radio this week. His country debut CD, 'Learn to Live,' comes out September 16.

Crystal Shawanda Makes Music History

Crystal Shawanda's new album, 'Dawn of a New Day,' debuted at No. 16 on the country albums charts this week, making her the highest charting Native American country artist in the history of SoundScan.

Shawanda, which means "dawn of a new day" in her native Ojibwe language, grew up on the Wikwemikong reservation in Canada. Her father was a truck driver and made regular trips to Nashville for work. As a little girl, she'd sometimes ride along, and got inspired by peering in the window of Nashville's famed Tootsie's Orchid Lounge to watch the musicians performing there.

Rascal Flatts 'Bob' Heads for College Football

Rascal Flatts' song 'Bob That Head' has been rewritten and recorded for college football. The hot country trio will be featured in the opening video montage of every Raycom Sports telecast of ACC and SEC games in the 2008 season.

"We can't think of anything more fun and exciting than mixing two of our favorites things -- music and football," says lead singer Gary LeVox.

LeVox and bandmates Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney have also filmed a personalized greeting to air for each conference. College football kicks off this Saturday, as the Florida Gators host the Hawaii Warriors.
