What The Critics Say

Lacking the metallic crunch of The Offspring or the striaght-ahead punk-pop of Green Day, Wax sounds ragged and unhinged like early Soul Asylum, even if it's only an appearance. They have melodies, but their singing is slightly off-key, their guitars are either disjointed or speed along at pseudo-hardcore velocity. At their best, they seem like it doesn't all quite fit together -- as on the single "California," where the vocals never seem to quite keep up with the tempo. And they have enough sense to market themselves with a slick Spike Jonez video and license a song to a Nike commercial, before 13 Unlucky Numbers was released. Keep in mind that three of the 13 tracks are blank and the album clocks in at 23 minutes. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

The primitive pop-punk of Wax is presented in perhaps its best form on What Else Can We Do, the band's 1992 Caroline Records debut. Vocalist Joe Sib, guitarist Tom Gardocki, bassist Dave Georgeff, and one-named drummer Loomis lay down 11 tracks of rock & roll-influenced upbeat punk rock that approximates the Ramones. Highlights include the raucous but catchy "All Over Again" and the CD's best song by far, "So I Said." Wax couldn't ever recapture the spirit of What Else Can We Do after landing a major label record deal with Interscope. Although their later efforts were respectable, nothing the group produced could match this offering. Fans of Wax who haven't yet acquired this disc are definitely encouraged to snatch a copy up at the first opportunity. ~ Vincent Jeffries, All Music Guide
