revisiting: shrimp boat’s cavale

- Source: Captains Dead

shrimp boat formed in 87, and at the time of their formation i was 13, and they were just a little bit ahead of my musical tastes at that point. shit i was still in kind of a heavy metal/hair metal stage at that point. although, my tastes were definitely turning/evolving into what they are today. either way, their 1993 record and final release, cavale, really hit the spot with 19 year old me. for those that dont know, shrimp boat was made up of what was pretty much chicago royalty, at the time, sam prekop, brad wood, eric claridge, david kroll and ian schneller. after their disbandment sam and eric went on to form the sea and cake. you can hear the direction/style that the sea and cake would take on all over cavale , and the other shrimp boat releases, but most noticeably on cavale. its definitely more funky than any sea and cake record, but the jazzy vibe definitely carried over to the sea and cake. this is not to say that cavale is a funk record, by any stretch, but their are definitely elements of the genre sprinkled throughout. if youre a fan of the sea and cake but never listened to any shrimp boat stuff, i cannot recommend all of their recordings enough, esp cavale.
