What The Critics Say

In 1955, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey's Orchestra was doing well, as the swing-era survivors satisfied a dancing audience with nostalgic remakes of hits and some newer charts in the swing idiom. This set of very well recorded live performances (released for the first time on this 1995 CD) alternates jazz-oriented tracks (with concise but worthy contributions from trumpeter Charlie Shavers and drummer Louie Bellson), spots for both trombonist Tommy and altoist Jimmy, and some vocal cuts featuring Lynn Roberts, Bill Raymond and Bruce Snyder. Nothing surprising occurs, and the music sounds conservative (even for the period), but swing fans will find the performances to be enjoyable. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
