“Heads up out there, this is David Byrne. During our show, we welcome picture taking, video recording, audio recording Whoa. From a taper’s standpoint, that was some of the best news I’d heard in a long time. David Byrne’s opening announcement at all of the shows on this current tour with St. Vincent has included that invitation, which we happily accepted for the Williamsburg Waterfront show on Saturday night. As these two amazing musicians tour in support of their collaborative album Love This Giant , these performances are likely our single unique opportunity to experience a little cross-generational magic, and having this nice souvenir of the show is a great way to re-live a night that I truly enjoyed from start to finish. As this was a hometown show for Annie Clark, it was refreshing that virtually all of the crowd was tuned in for the St. Vincent portions of the show. That positive feedback seemed to energize Annie, as she was positively on fire throughout the night on both guitar and vocals. The stage movements were also well choreographed and entertaining. And of course the horns. The idea to incorporate a horn section of the ringers was a stroke of genius. We were doubly pleased to learn that much of the charting was done by Kelly Pratt, whose immense talents were we fortunate to experience up close at a Backyard Brunch session in 2010. And at the center of it all was Mr. Byrne, whose unbridled energy belies his sixty years. As forward-looking and genre-jumping as any artist of his generation, David Byrne played this crowd as well as could be imagined, as he straddled the need to give the oldies some meat — “This Must Be The Place” (streaming below) was a delightful highlight — along with the need to play contemporary material. Indeed, the Giant material shined on this night, from the opening “Who” to the main set closing “Outside Of Space and Time” (also streaming below) which Byrne dedicated to the Higgs-Boson Particle.
