What The Critics Say

The Southern Sons were among the most popular and influential gospel groups performing during the early '50s in the Mississippi Delta. There had been two other editions, in the '30s and '40s, that had worked in the North and sung in the jubilee (unison) style. This third ensemble had veterans from the prior two units, notably the great bass singer Clifford Givens, who had been in the other editions, plus one of his discoveries, singer James Walker. This group and its successors are featured on Deep South Gospel performing in the surging, "deep" mode popularized by The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, and the harmonies and leads are majestic throughout. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
