Inspired by the likes of Built to Spill, Yo La Tengo, and Wilco, Doug Smith (vocals, guitar), Fabian Halabou (guitar, bass), and Brian Berryman (keyboards, bass, drums) formed the indie rock trio Sea of Japan. Based in Ferndale, MI, the group recorded its debut album with the help of a number of musicians recruited by Halabou (among them Blanche, the Silent Years, Child Bite, and Judah Johnson).
