Scott 4 set their statement of purpose on the first track "Start-Up," a song that begins with a banjo-heavy backwoods stomp but gradually transforms into a crisp drum-machine track complete with 808 claps and stark beats. Much of the rest of Recorded in State has the same fixation with the polar extremes of organics and electronics, though the soundclash is much smoother than expected. Occasionally, Scott Blixen goes a bit too far on his vocal turns, though his overblown tear through "Your Kingdom to Dust" is an entertaining highlight. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
