What The Critics Say

Throughout her career Rebecca St. James has been a bit of a musical chameleon, dabbling in electronica, folk, and traditional praise & worship settings. But like all good vocalists, she rises to the occasion and adapts with great ease to whatever the canvas presents to her. This time around she finds herself in the trenches of the highly polished, extremely commercial alternative rock sound throughout "If I Had One Chance to Tell You Something." The driving sound of "Alive," "You Are Loved," and "Shadowland" brings to mind tonal qualities normally found in Linkin Park or Coheed & Cambria, but only if they were filtered through having tea with the Cranberries with lyrics emerging from a wholly Christian perspective. Like on most of her releases, St. James' pleasant and inoffensive presentation throughout the 12 songs could easily find their way onto the soundtrack or background music found on any prime time teen soap opera on the UPN or WB networks. And the music is so contemporary and the lyrics sometimes so ambiguous, it's easy to forget where her message is coming from and what it's all about. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Long before recording her February 2002 release, Worship God, Grammy award-winning artist Rebecca St. James displayed a fervent passion for worship. With each prior album, from her 1994 self-titled debut to her 2000 release Transform, St. James' focus and purpose have been clear: to honor, glorify, and worship God. In this respect, Worship God is merely an extension of her past work. It is an album expressing her desire to grow into a deeper love relationship with Jesus. In addition, it is an invitation to listeners, beckoning them to seek intimacy and connection with God through adoration and love. In an interview with http://www.familychristian.com, St. James described Worship God as "passionate, edgy pop/rock with half of the album full of songs people would be familiar with from church and then half brand new, fresh worship songs." Included in the category of well-known songs are the album's first radio single, "Breathe," Matt Redman's "Better Is One Day," and "God of Wonders," a song popularized by the album City on a Hill. New songs include "Song of Love," "Lamb of God," and the project's definite highlight, "You," a track written solely by St. James. The album also features the remix version of her 1998 song "Omega." Many Christian music listeners may ask, "Why another worship album in 2002? Haven't we heard enough in 1999, 2000, and 2001?" Yet, Worship God is not just another album latching onto the genre's popularity. It is a reflection of Rebecca St. James' lifestyle of worship and one that will not quickly leave CD players. ~ Ashleigh Kittle, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Recording her first album at age 16, Rebecca St. James is no stranger to contagious pop melodies. At 23, St. James released her fifth recording entitled Transform. The disc's opener is a monumental one courtesy of the London Symphony Orchestra. "For the Love of God" boasts an immense string section that gradually gives way to a driving rock rhythm. "Reborn" is a techno, dance groove that's powered by a wall of churning synths. "One" is alterna-funk to the max. The tune's backbeat is akin to "Black Cat" by Janet Jackson, while the lyrics denote spiritual togetherness: "Don't make no difference, where were coming from, we believe in the Son, and that's what makes us one." The only difference in the two tunes is Jackson's has a hot, distorted lead guitar break while "One" utilizes a more subdued Spanish guitar riff. "Wait for Me" is a plea for sexual purity. St. James wrote the cut for her future husband whomever he may be. The song has a graceful hook that accentuates her truthful lyrics. "All Around Me" is the disc's most potent rocker. The cut was co-written by Pete Stewart, who also offers guitar contributions on the tune. The song harkens back to earlier St. James stylings from her God release. Transform has textured production, Top 40 resonance, and inspiring lyrics. ~ Steven D. Losey , All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Pray, released by Forefront Records in 1998, is the follow-up project to Rebecca St. James' much talked about album, God. The release mirrors the alternative rock style St. James adopted in her sophomore album, straying from the CCM sounds featured on her debut project. Songs include the title cut, "Come Quickly Lord," and "Omega." Pray also covers Rich Mullins' "Hold Me Jesus" and Keith Green's "Lord You're Beautiful." ~ Ashleigh Kittle, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Rebecca St. James' Christmas is an enchanting holiday record, highlighting not only her faith, but also her remarkable vocal skills. The album is divided between traditional songs and new material, and while some of the newer material is a little weak, St. James sounds terrific, no matter what song she is singing. ~ Rodney Batdorf, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Rebecca St. James sounds wise beyond her 18 years on her second album, God. St. James is a passionate songwriter, proclaiming her love for the lord in a variety of inventive ways. But the true strength of the album is her beautiful voice, which soars throughout. ~ Rodney Batdorf, All Music Guide
