Kazutaka Nomura went solo under the name of PWRFL Power following the 2006 breakup of Na, a trio which Nomura became a part of soon after he came to the United States from Japan at the age of 18. PWRFL Power stood in stark contrast to Na's spare post-rock experimentation; backed by a lone acoustic guitar, Nomura put together a group of songs whose quirky lyrics, earnest vocals, and offbeat pop sensibilities put him squarely in league with artists like Sufjan Stevens, Chris Garneau, and Final Fantasy. Nomura's new project made waves in the Seattle area almost from its inception, snagging first place at the 2007 Capitol Hill Block Party "Block Star" competition. Nomura signed a deal with Slender Means Society soon after that, and his self-titled, full-length debut on that label was released in the spring of 2008. PWRFL Power's profile was given an extra boost just before the album came out when he appeared in an animated commercial for eSurance, performing the song "It's Okay." That song, along with several other tracks, was featured on a limited-edition 7" put out by New York's Catbird Records later that year. ~ Margaret Reges, Rovi
