all kindsa cross-pollination, travelled paths and snaking tendrils here. missouri via memphis via ohio. sun records via flying nun via columbus discount. those kinda classic rock moves as eviscerated by royal trux. peter laughner, with a country bent (less robert johnson, more uncle tupelo). james jackson toth loves them and it's not hard to see why. jeremy freeze ploughs the same goddam furrow. not so much reinventing as y'know reinvigorating decades worth of straight forward pop / rock / singersongwriter tropes. bits of blooze. bits of country. bits of garage. bits of psych. think i've built up such a tolerance for noise now that anything even approaching fidelity sounds cleanly smooth as steely dan's aja. so yeah i've heard semigripes about the production fucking up the melody and yeah there's a total dirgey velvets / exile on main st. / riot goin' on bleary fug to most of this. but goddam it suits. nice juxtaposerry between the sweet and sour, tender and ugly. stumbling waltzes and whisky howls and bursts of blackened fuzz.
