Pete Escovedo reminds everyone why he continues to be such a dominant force in the world of Latin jazz percussion, coming on strong with his first live recording in almost two decades and mixing classic standards and original compositions throughout the session. Escovedo's percussion work is fearless and the rest of his band (including sons Juan and Peter as well as daughter Sheila E.) is equally up to the task. Every imaginable facet of Latin jazz is explored in what seems like a short period of time, but the music is so enjoyable that the session breezes by and leaves the listener wanting more. Here's hoping that another 15 years don't pass by without another release like this. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide
Pete Escovedo displays his wide musical interests on this consistently colorful set, enthusiastically playing salsa, Afro-Cuban jazz, bits of pop, and some straight-ahead jazz. Escovedo's regular band (including pianist Joe Rutonudi, Justo Almario on reeds, trumpeter Ramon Flores, and two trombonists) is joined by quite a few guests along the way, including trumpeter Ray Vega, guitarist Ray Obiedo, pianist George Duke, and Sheila E. on vocals, drums, and percussion. The resulting music is not for purists of any style but for open-minded listeners who enjoy genre-crossing music that has plenty of fire and spirit. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
An active force in Latin jazz since the '60s, Pete Escovedo is well-known in the San Francisco Bay area; not only as a seasoned percussionist and bandleader, but as the musical and spiritual head of the Familia Escovedo. His brother is fellow musician Coke Escovedo, and his children and relatives include percussionist/vocalist Sheila E., producer/bandleader/percussionist Peter Michael Escovedo, and Texas-based singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo. Flying South, a 1996 release, continues Escovedo's exploration of the musical region where Latin jazz, salsa, and pop meet. Featuring contributions from George Duke, Andy Narrell, and Najee, highlights include the title track, "Tiemblas," and a Cal Tjader composition, "Leyte." For fans of Koinania, Alex Acuna & the Unknowns, and pop/jazz/Latin crossover, this disc is a worthwhile buy. ~ Gregg Juke, All Music Guide
