What The Critics Say

Norma Jean was country music's "other woman," constantly portrayed in song as the home-wrecker who leads other women's husbands astray. It is not be the most flattering image imaginable, but it made for some truly intense and even disturbing hard country records in the '60s and '70s. The fresh, smiling face of Norma Jean next to the album title Another Man Loved Me Last Night neatly captures the dissonance between her wholesome appearance and gritty songs. The title track is yet another one of the cheating songs that were Norma Jean's trademark, but most of the album deals with heartbreak and regret. A few randy songs slip through, like the sexually charged "Somebody's Gonna Plow Your Field," and "Home Made Love," which is a tacit endorsement of male infidelity. Norma Jean's uncompromising hard country music wasn't selling as well as it once had at this stage, largely because of her having left a high-profile gig with the Porter Wagoner Show, but she remained one of the most fascinating women in country music. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
