What The Critics Say

Mikey Dread came to international prominence as a producer for the Clash in the early '80s, after his "Dread at the Control" radio show made him a star in Jamaica. Mikey is one of the more heavy-handed dub producers, and his solo albums are typically laden with ten-ton bass and dripping echo. His singing voice is something of an acquired taste, but for those with adventurous tastes, his work is some of the most exciting in reggae. "Dub Party" finds him working in a style similar to that of the African Anthem albums he made for RAS a while back (and recycling a few of the same tracks, as well). The musicians vary and a few tracks are synthesized; several of the numbers feature Mikey's rather nasal singing voice. All are at least pretty good, and many are excellent. Not quite as essential as the Niney the Observer album that ROIR released at around the same time, but much better than average. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Mikey Dread continues to move away from the early Dread at the Controls dub sound, involving himself with a mixture of lover's rock and smooth low-key reggae that verges sometimes on a kind of new age mix. It's a long way from what he used to do, but it's still entertaining -- and is far easier to enjoy because the music isn't designed to turn your mind inside out. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide
