Without a glimmer of Billy Bragg — itself a rarity at any event of this nature — the nearest we had to polemic was Tom Robinson, shrewdly observing early on that "the most incendiary songs in the last 30 years have been written by hip-hop artists" before launching into an impressively impassioned performance of Michael Franti's Language Of Violence Robinson returned later to give the proceedings a much-needed lift with a hearty, sing-along Glad To Be Gay while, in between, a cast list that included 86-year-old Nicaraguan poet Claribel Alegría, Russian singer Boris Grebenshikov, Durham singer-songwriter Jez Lowe and performance poet/author Lemn Sissay tackled a motley assortment of issues surrounding war, racism, bankers, politicians, business greed, priests, gypsies, politicians and sexuality.
