The Phantom has one of the most incredible and powerful voices on the planet, and the pairing of that with some of Disney's top songs (mostly from films of recent years) seems a sure bet. Certainly, it's a beautifully produced collection, with Crawford backed by beautiful strings and a children's choir on "Your Heart Will Lead You Home" (from The Tigger Movie). He's so eloquent and perfect, though, that some of the whimsy and edge of the original songs is lost on his versions. "You'll Be in My Heart" is pleasantly upbeat in an adult contemporary manner, but lacks the percussive fire and vocal edge of Phil Collins' take. Certain elements of "The Lion King Medley" require a little more grit as well, though he shines on the "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" passage. He brings an emotional power to "Colors of the Wind," but not quite enough of the original spirit. Crawford is much more effective on the simpler ballads like "I Know the Truth" (from AIDA) and especially Dumbo's classic "Baby Mine," to which he brings the necessary grace and innocence. Crawford fans will surely love it, and fans of Disney may enjoy adding it to their collections. But fans of many of these original versions will hardly be tempted to stop listening to the source recordings for this project. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide
Michael Crawford's In the Moon of Wintertime: Christmas with Michael Crawford features holiday favorites like "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," and less well-known songs such as "Strange Way to Save the World," "Scarlet Ribbons," and "Candlelight Carol." Crawford's powerful, expressive vocals make this Christmas album a must for Broadway fans. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
Surprising as it may be, Michael Crawford did not release an official live album until the fall of 1998, when In Concert appeared in the stores. Recorded at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, California just two weeks before the release of On Eagle's Wings, this concert, which was initially broadcast on PBS, is an excellent showcase not only for Michael Crawford, the world-class singer, but for Michael Crawford, the world-class entertainer. In Concert contains a skillful, varied selection of tunes, ranging from contemporary show tunes and Andrew Lloyd Webber songs Crawford made famous, to Irish medleys and standards. He punctuates several tracks with monologues and brings Dale Kristien out for backing vocals on "The Phantom of the Opera" and "All I Ask of You." The results are warm, welcoming, and terrifically entertaining -- a perfect testament to a great Broadway singer and showman. ~ Robert Lovering, All Music Guide
On Eagle's Wings is an excellent collection of spiritual and gospel songs as sung by Michael Crawford, star of The Phantom of the Opera. Not all of the songs are strictly religious -- rather, they're moving pieces with a spiritual undertow. Everything is tied together by Crawford's gorgeous voice, which helps make On Eagle's Wings a disc to remember. ~ Rodney Batdorf, All Music Guide
Filled with familiar numbers, this collection is a better showing for Michael Crawford than Songs from the Stage and Screen. The LSO is balanced out better, the performances seem far less rushed, and Crawford is in far better shape vocally. The big surprise: Art of Noise keyboardist Anne Dudley turns in an arranging and conducting job on "When I Fall in Love" that would make Nelson Riddle nod appreciatively. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide
