Wonderland By Night is a far cry from the boisterous, good-time Italian swing of Louis Prima's popular Capitol recordings. This sequel to Prima's 1960 album, Pretty Music: Prima Style, is comprised of orchestral pop instrumentals, some of which incorporate a wordless vocal chorus. Nighttime is the theme of the album, with Prima's trumpet out in front to carry the melody. Prima's copycat version of the title track competed on the charts with Bert Kaempfert's original, but Kaempfert enjoyed substantially greater success. Wonderland By Night is a fine, atmospheric album that sets an evening mood any time of the day, but is completely unlike the music for which Prima is best known. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
Louis Prima and Keely Smith were at the height of their fame when they starred in the Hollywood film Hey Boy! Hey Girl! This soundtrack album has ten numbers from the film including spots for Prima's trumpet on "Oh Marie" and "When the Saints Go Marching In," two numbers for Smith in which she is backed by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, a feature for Sam Butera on "Fever" and several notable vocal duets by the stars (including "Lazy River" and two versions of the title cut). The music never quite cuts loose but does include some exciting moments. Louis Prima fans will want to search for this collector's item. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Louis Prima's second Capitol LP with Keely Smith, Sam Butera and the Witnesses is just as exciting as his first. The trumpeter-vocalist was a natural entertainer and comedian, and all of his skills are on evidence during this spirited program. The honking tenor of Sam Butera, Keely Smith's appealing voice and the mixture of dixieland and R&B results in some remarkable and very accessible music. Highlights include the medley of "When You're Smiling" and "The Sheik of Araby," trombonist Red Blount's feature on "Blow, Red, Blow," "Pennies from Heaven," "The Birth of the Blues" and "When the Saints Go Marching In." What a band. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
