What The Critics Say

When Eddie Levert's two sons, Gerald and Sean, teamed with Marc Gordon to form their own trio, everyone in the R&B community expected great things. They didn't get off to a good start when they recorded for the tiny Tempre label, but once they moved to Atlantic, Levert began building their image and reputation. They earned a number one R&B hit with "(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind" and followed it with a Top 20 single in "Let's Go Out Tonight." Gerald's delivery, tone and approach mirrored his father's; their harmonies and production were contemporary, yet also reflected The O'Jays' influence. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

LeVert's second album started a run of hits that extended into the 1990s. They earned their first pop hit and second number one R&B single with "Casanova," while "My Forever Love" was a solid follow-up and excellent ballad. Gerald LeVert proved his mettle as a lead singer; although not as explosive as his father, he had a similar gift for communicating a lyric, and he teamed nicely with brother Sean LeVert and Marc Gordon on ballads. LeVert's singles weren't as anthemic as the O'Jays', but they were established hitmakers on the urban contemporary scene. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

The Whole Scenario finds Levert bouncing back to action, recovering the ground they lost in the early '90s. Although the album has some clear contemporary hip-hop influences, it works because Levert hasn't lost sight of their primary strengths as a soulful vocal group. Throughout The Whole Scenario, the group works dance numbers and ballads with equal aplomb, and while the material is occasionally subpar, their performances never are. ~ Leo Stanley, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

This album is not quite as commendable as their previous ones...Gerald Levert's vocal presence is minimal, and moreover, the selections that bear his lead are average at best. Nonetheless, the album did have a few bright spots. It reared a Billboard R&B Top Ten single in "ABC-123" and a Top 20 single in "Good Ol' Days." The latter was the first release, harboring a rumbling bassline in which the group shares lead vocal duties. It managed to peak at #12 after ten weeks. The former has a sweet, sensual charm. With Gerald's commanding vocals out front through the verses, Sean imparts a noticeably orchestrated pre-hook lyric. The two further their vocal exchange in the vamp. The third single was "Do the Thangs." It too has total group participation vocally... ~ Craig Lytle, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

On Rope a Dope Style, LeVert still sounded energetic and appealing on such cuts as "Nobody Does It Better" and "Hey Girl." Gerald LeVert will never have the same command or dramatic presence as his dad, but he's developed into a sincere, effective vocalist. But when the raps begin on the title cut or "Nobody Does It Better," not only do they mar the song's pace, they split the listener's focus and change the mood. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Levert scored with both uptempo and ballad cuts on their third Atlantic album. The single "Pull Over" clicked with dance audiences and was aided by a video that neatly played off the lyrical hook. The title track was also an urban contemporary radio hit and successful single, although the overall record didn't match the level of its predecessor, despite eventually going gold. In fact, the first signs of creative stagnation that would really surface on their next release were evident on such songs as "Take Your Time" and "Join In The Fun." ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
