What The Critics Say

Released as a promotional-only CD by Canada's highly successful Gold Club Series, this mix CD delivers exactly what it implies, the Ibiza party experience filtered through the glasses of John Acquaviva. So despite the horrid gold bikini motif on the packaging of Jet to Brazil, this is better than a million other compilations sharing Ibiza in the name. But with the first three tracks being titled "Iberican Sound," "Chic-O-laa," and "Spanish Fly," it is pretty obvious that this mix has some serious equatorial flavor. The mix barrels forward for its entire length, subtly switching over from house to techno midway through with the Euro-dance electro-tech of Snapmode's "Assimilation," but the Spanish conga theme never really subsides even with Scottish techno mainstays Slam producing some tropical flavor on "I Karamba." There isn't any real cheese, a staple on the Iberican menu, and there isn't a vocal track or mega-hit to be found, save the closing "Blackwater" which is both, but at least the Octave One breakout track is cut into fine slices by remixers Alter Ego. This mix is definitely Acquaviva 2002. It barely holds a candle to his classic Transmissions, Vol. 1 or Skills mix CDs, but it still maintains a level of integrity above his DJ peer group, operating on the same level of success. ~ Joshua Glazer, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

No, it's not a misspelling -- miles away from New York lies Mainhatten, the sparkling financial center of Frankfurt, Germany, and home to more skyscrapers than any other city in Europe. Close by are the offices of Force Inc., not exactly a capital of German industry, but still one of techno's brightest and best labels of the late '90s. Ontario-based DJ John Acquaviva salutes the sound of one of his favorite mixing locales with this Shadow collection -- a mix of hard, minimal tracks by several excellent producers (not all of them German). Though Acquaviva begins his set with an uncharacteristically funky Porter Ricks track ("Spoil"), he quickly eases into the trademarked Force Inc. sound, with great tracks by Hakan Lidbo ("Proton/Elektron"), Stewart Walker ("Songs Without Climax"), and Thomas P. Heckmann (both as Heckmann and Welt in Sherben). ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

While extremely prolific in the DJ mix stakes, John Acquaviva has always had the tendency to tie his releases to a theme, be it label showcase or at least a club/party tie-in. The CreamCD mix was produced in conjunction with Montreal's Cream Festival, and in fact, the set has often been mislabeled as a "live" performance on various P2P services. It is an easy mistake to understand. The mix stands out as the closest Acquaviva has come to nailing the vibe of his thousands of club appearances onto one disc. Though known as the "house" side of the Plus 8/Definative label axis, Acquaviva has never been precisely a house DJ. Instead, his choice selection of cuts finely mix the hype of house with the future funk of techno, while his mixing drives the point home. Acquaviva is not afraid to combine the swirling organ of his own "Savannah" with the sturdy techno pump of partner Richie Hawtin's "Orange." Regardless of style, the pulse of this disc remains high with Acquaviva deftly combining disparate tracks that come together via his masterful timing and a mutual energy level shared by all. The high-potency funk rises to a boil with Stacey Pullen's "Sweat" before releasing with the robo-electro synths of Basco's "Music With a Feel." It's all classic Acquaviva, playing the best party records without regard for rules and regulations. Anyone looking to recall how Acquaviva moved them that one hazy night should start with this disc as a way to remember. ~ Joshua Glazer, All Music Guide
