What The Critics Say

Joe Stampley has been a recognized name in the Nashville country music scene since the '70s. Though he hovered toward the top of the national charts with songs such as "All These Things," "Roll on Big Mama," "Red Wine and Blue Memories," and "Do You Ever Fool Around," Stampley is probably best known for his teaming up with Moe Bandy in the '80s to produce hits such as "Just Good 'Ol Boys" and "Where's the Dress." On this album, Stampley is back on his own, self-producing Somewhere Under the Rainbow. The CD is a mixture of traditional country and R&B, featuring duets with son Tony Stampley and Rocki Rachal. Among the highlight cuts are the classic "If You Don't Know Me by Now," which Stampley delivers convincingly. "If It Ain't One Thing (It's Another)" is a dead-on musical rendition of the everyday chaos everyone has to endure, from paying bills to the frustration of waiting in traffic. The title track is a bluesy slow dance in motion reminiscent of the smoky honky tonk settings of Stampley's early years. Also included is a Stampley version of the Ritchie Valens upbeat classic "Boney Maronie," which Stampley makes his own and punctuates with rock & roll guitar mixed with steel. It will be interesting to see how country radio responds to this album, for it's not highly commercial. Country radio has responded to Stampley before, hopefully they'll do so again. ~ Rick Cohoon, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

I'm Still Loving You gets off to a strong start with three songs that were hit singles in 1973-1974: "How Lucky Can One Man Be," "Too Far Gone," and the title track. Stampley left Dot Records for Epic around the time this album was made and his former label issued a string of singles, many drawn from album tracks, to compete with his new Epic recordings. I'm Still Loving You may have been cobbled together from scraps since both the title track and "Too Far Gone" were pulled from Stampley's previous album, Soul Song. Despite the overlap, I'm Still Loving You has some choice moments in "The Weatherman" and "Hello Charlie," both of which come closer to straight country than Stampley's usual Charlie Rich-style country-soul hybrid. "Not Too Long Ago" is a good example of the latter, the product of Stampley's tenure in rock & roll and pop vocal groups before switching to country music. Stampley made some of his best music for Dot Records, and I'm Still Loving You contains nearly a third of his output for the label. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
