What The Critics Say

The second side begins with a song entitled "Most of the Time." There is the usual flawless Chet Atkins-produced setup, and then comes a voice, a man who sounds so smooth and totally in control, and he sings "I just burned the picture of you that was on my wall." The contrast between the helpless emotion of the lyrics and the image of a crooner such as Jim Reeves makes for a classic country & western moment. When they call this album The Country Side, the label implies more of a country direction than some of the Reeves country-pop material. In point of fact Reeves may never be country enough for some listeners, but there is definitely some genre-specific content, including piercing pedal steel licks sopping wet with reverb and echo, and some excellent songs, including the artist's own "Yonder Comes a Sucker." As a country singer, though, he is a crooner, make no mistake. Every "o" he pronounces comes out "oooh." ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

The insatiable demand for new Jim Reeves product following his death resulted in unusual releases like Yours Sincerely, Jim Reeves. The first side of the album consists of a tape recording Reeves made during a European tour in 1964 when a disc jockey asked him to tell his life story. The track listing gives the impression that the program is mostly music, but the songs typically appear in excerpts when referenced in Reeves' narration. There are a few rarities: a snippet of a 1948 newscast Reeves made in his days as an announcer and two nearly complete songs performed during an early radio broadcast. Side Two has Reeves' original recordings of six popular tunes interspersed with brief introductions taken, presumably, from a radio transcription or interview. Reeves' anecdotes about his childhood experiences are interesting, but most listeners will find that Yours Sincerely, Jim Reeves is good for no more than one listen. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
