Alicia Keys spends the bulk of her fourth release in easy-listening mode, setting the sonic agenda with the atmospheric soul of "Love Is Blind" and signing off with an anthemic Jay-Z-free version of "Empire State of Mind." But it's on tracks that work the rhythmic kind of mellow that she really hits her stride, from the tambourine and drum fills that punctuate "Doesn't Mean Anything" to the insistent drum loop powering the album's most majestic cut, "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart," which could pass for the sort of thing Prince would have written within a few hours of "Nothing Compares 2 U." And when Beyonce turns up on a female-empowerment anthem with cheerleader handclaps to go with the marching band-gone-tribal drum-line beat, the result is probably as close to "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" as Keys will ever come - although it kind of leaves you wishing she felt free enough to step outside her comfort zone more often.
