These tracks capture the band's melodic sensibilities through the prism of lo-fi production values, interspersing more accessible cuts like 'She Wore Blue and Green' and 'Build A Bigger Iceberg' with the abrasive rawness of 'Full Framed Luberon' and 'Little Jimmy The Giant's distorted noise, and ending with the warped, baroque psych of 'See You Soon'.

detective “basket of masks” – opening for guided by voices in new orleans, 9.22

- Source: Captains Dead

james greer and guylaine vivarat aka detective have been busy this year. first they released one of my favorite records/eps of the the year, basket of masks , and now theyre releasing their debut record however strange – its already been released fyi. i really dug basket of masks , but me thinks i am digging this one even more. i can see both records ending in my top 20 of the year. one thing i love about listening to detective is that they dont sound 2012. in fact i would place them circa early 80′s to early 90′s, or maybe something 4ad would have put out in that time frame. as i like to liken sounds to personal experiences, this would be the perfect saturday/sunday morning record when you may be a little hungover, or maybe its winter in a northern state and youre all snuggled up in a blanket. shit, i dont know? either way its great stuff. make sure you check em out opening for guided by voices on this leg of their tour, and in new orleans on saturday, 9.22 at one eyed jacks – ill be there probably wearing a white sox hat so say hi, or dont…. buy however strange via their bandcamp site and get some nice goodies with your purchase, and oh its only 5 bucks. so definitely worth it.
