Outside continues Gary Chapman's penchant for touching, sentimental paeans to the joys of fatherhood, as well as songs addressing his Christian faith and the subject of love in general. Overall, it's a very positive, affirming outlook that Chapman shares, and fortunately, the songs here live up to the standards of craft that he set on previous releases. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
Gary Chapman's holiday album This Gift may suffer from overly slick production, but it remains a fine contemporary country Christmas album. Most of the record is comprised of classics and modern standards -- "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer/Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town," "The Christmas Song," "O Holy Night," "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," "Silent Night," "I'll Be Home for Christmas" -- with a couple of new songs and lesser-known tunes added for good measure. The record meanders a little, but overall, it's an entertaining listen, especially for dedicated Chapman fans. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide
Gary Chapman is highly underrated as a songwriter/performer. For the most part, the songs on Shelter won't immediately jump out at the listener, but the tracks do grow on you after a few repeated listens. The album opens with an a cappella version of "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" and closes with the rocking "Gospel Ship." In between are ten tracks that showcase Chapman's fine songwriting and performing abilities. Produced by Michael Omartian, Shelter is not Gary Chapman's best release, but it is still a worthy find. ~ Tim Griggs, All Music Guide
Grammy-winning producer Michael Omartian teams with Chapman for a comfortably satisfying album, including remakes of two songs from his earlier (and out of print) Lamb & Lion albums. ~ Thom Granger, All Music Guide
Chapman's first album in years was prescient in its marriage of pop and country styles on this set, having the unfortunate effect of missing the moment with both audiences. ~ Thom Granger, All Music Guide
