Gardenian's first album for Nuclear Blast, and second overall, Soulburner tones down the group's previous death-metal orientation somewhat, with more intelligible vocals and snatches of melody here and there. This actually helps add to the impression of the band's power, and although it isn't quite as progressive as one might expect from an In Flames side project, the more straight-ahead approach serves the record well. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
