What The Critics Say

Boris Grebenshikov was a major contributor to Refuge, widely recognized as one of the best CD's by Gabrielle Roth & the Mirrors. Rob Ansell, Roth's husband, and Scott Ansell, his son, co-produced Bardo, Grebenshikov's second CD with Roth. This CD will have folks rushing to re-evaluate their discographies. This is stunning! Grebenshikov created a mythical vocal language -- a "bardo" -- just for this project. His vocals are a primary instrument in Roth's sound design. She has gathered a stellar supporting cast again. Her primary contributions to her own projects are as director, writer, and arranger (sound designer). Bardo is a deep biorhythmic set designed for meditation and healing dance rituals. Deep listeners will have the urge to get up and dance. The rhythms connect directly to the body clock and take over. Most of Roth's projects are unique, but this disc will appeal to fans of Mickey Hart and Byron Metcalf. ~ Jim Brenholts, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Roth has generated a considerable amount of attention over the past few years, sometimes appearing controversial, at other times almost seeming to be part of the new age/new spiritual mainstream (though this latter suggestion might cause serious agitation on her part). Refuge, produced in collaboration with Russian vocalist Boris Grebenshikov, embraces standard forms and steps beyond them, thanks to Grebenshikov's resounding baritone. The album is dedicated to Tibet, with income from the album being donated to Tibetan support groups. A beautiful piece of work with a wonderful spiritual glow at its heart. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Mirrors musical director Gabrielle Roth takes her Five Rhythms (see Roth bio) onto the pavement and out into the steely nights of the city. Acoustic drums and percussion still set the trance-dance beats, but touches of electricity (bass, synth, drum programs) have infiltrated the hypnotic cadences. The result is an album more for pure dance (fun!) than for moving through emotional catharsis. Indeed, Roth's usual slogan, "Sweat your prayers," is slightly altered to "Dance your heart out and your ass off -- into the zone." The title cut is a slinky, almost spooky, version of her typical belly-dance "flowing" movement. Listening to this cut, one can easily see how the flowing movement will catalyze the emotion of fear -- very shadowy. "Downtown" includes the cool, muted jazz trumpet of Chris Botti, the funky bass of Sergio Bandao, and Roth's sultry voice coaxing, "Let's dance." The lively "Buffalo Dream" gallops in a 6/8 chaos cadence, but it has a Native American feel to it. "Avenue A" is a breathless run amid the streets and wires of the city, while "Jamu" returns to a slinkier blues chaos rhythm with Jai Uttal on guitars and synth and Mindy Jostyn on harmonica and vocals. The album ends with the smoldering stillness of "Drifting"; Mark Shulman is featured on the wailing guitar. If you've seen and danced to Roth's Wave video, you'd know how much Roth is a creature of the Village; this album celebrates the mysteries of the city while still staking claim to the soul. ~ Carol Wright, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Trance is the latest in Gabrielle's cutting-edge musical series exploring primeval dance rhythms and ecstatic trance. Since her earlier drum-based efforts, Gabrielle's music has become more worldbeat in orientation, propelled by a powerful percussion section & various musicians who lend distinctive flavors to the pieces. At times funky and danceable, there are other portions which are airy and melodic, with trilling flutes and smoky sax. Jai Uttal adds to half the cuts, while Daniel Lauter and bandleader Robert Ansell join in as well. Rhythmic but restrained, earthy but ethereal, Trance is a strong pancultural statement about the hypnotic power of rhythm. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats, All Music Guide
