What The Critics Say

The stylish and summery pop of San Francisco's Fairways was finally put to disc with the band's debut on Paris Caramel Records. Fairways had already built a strong fan base by playing up and down the West Coast after the band's formation following the dissolution of Skypark. The disc kicks off with the organ-laced "A Song for Jenni." Brent Kenji's soft and wistful lead vocals, which are reminiscent of Josh Gennet of Holiday, are an immediate highlight. The intricately strummed guitars on "Close to Me" form the foundation of the most rousing song on the disc, which also includes horns and tambourine. The song begins at a subdued pace and quickly evolves into an indie pop classic. After the simple and poetic "Quarter to Seven" by Kenji, "Postcard Picture Perfect" is another steadily catchy track, sounding like what might be played in the dancehalls at an indie pop rave. "Get It Right," like "Secretive Girl," starts off with a folksy and jangly guitar line by former New Bad Things guitarist Andrew Leavitt. The songs highlight the band's precise musicianship. "Phthalo Blue" might have been the perfect album closer with its unabashedly cheerful poppiness, a mood that resonates through the whole disc. Is Everything All Right? features guest appearances by Amy Linton of Aislers Set and ex-Ciao Bella member Jaime McCormick.
