The athletic directors at Providence, St. John's, Georgetown and Syracuse invite Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College to form the Big East as a basketball conference. 1982 -- Pitt joins the Big East. Penn State applies for inclusion, but is rejected. 1986 -- The Panthers replace basketball coach Roy Chipman with Paul Evans. 1987 -- Pitt wins its first Big East regular-season title, sharing the honor with Georgetown. 1988 -- Pitt wins the Big East regular-season title outright with 12-4 conference record. 1991 -- Miami, Rutgers, Temple, Virginia Tech and West Virginia join and the Big East begins sponsoring football.
