What The Critics Say

Eddie Santiago is a native and beloved son of Puerto Rico, an island known for liking it's salsa straight and uncut. Throughout his career he has been happy to deliver exactly that. His 2004 record, Despues del Silencio, follows Santiago's recipe for no-frills, super clean dancehall salsa. Some of his tried and true ingredients include high quality songwriting, (contributed primarily by Luis Angel, Pedro Jesus, and Santiago himself) a super tight horn and percussion section (arranged in part by salsa heavy-hitter Ramon B. Sanchez) and of coarse, Santiago's own charming performance. This record is so squeaky clean that it almost causes a certain nostalgia for the time when salsa was a little dirtier, and its artists a little less reputable. There is a fine line between tight, clean performances and sterility, and this record walks that line. Thankfully, Eddie Santiago's vocal performances, if not gritty, are certainly emotional and genuine. His vocal range and control are as impressive as ever. Despues del Silencio does lack stylistic variety and a little soul, but Santiago more than makes up for that. Straight-ahead salsa is what he does, and he does that quite well. ~ Evan C. What The Critics Say

Eddie Santiago, a singer credited with popularizing the "salsa sensual" style, has a career that's spanned over 20 years, and he's been exceptionally busy during that time, with more than an album a year since his debut, and plenty of collections of his work on the market. For 2004, Santiago attempted something slightly different than his usually sweet, romantic salsa. In tribute to fellow Latin pop icon, Santiago released Eddie Santiago Interpreta los Grandes Exitos de Luis Angel. Though it seems quite normal for one pop singer to interpret the successful material of another, it seems a bit strange for one to do so with a contemporary, as Angel's activity more or less coincided with Santiago's, though he's been less active of late. In many ways, it seems a good direction considering the consistently average quality of Santiago's repertoire, and Angel's strength for songwriting. Though there are moments when the mix of Santiago's vocal style and Angel's songcraft hit pay dirt, it's a mixed bag. Angel's emotive lyricism can come up short when interpreted by Santiago, whose boyish, simple delivery can render the material trite. The production is typically unassuming and flat. Though Santiago took a step in a positive direction, toward a little more substantive writing, one can only hope that Angel's material will fall into the hands of a better interpreter. ~ Evan C. What The Critics Say

Eddie Santiago reached full vocal development in this first foray with Sony. This is one of the artist's most accomplished recordings and, as usual, Omar Alfanno receives top marks for his sensitive tunes ("Anoche Valió la Pena," "Una Mujer Como Tú," and "Moría de las Ganas") that fit Santiago's style to a T. This highly enjoyable album is a must for any fans of Santiago who are game for a refurbishment of the singer's style. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr., All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Celebracion: Epic Duets documents Eddie Santiago's collaborations with an all-star cast of vocalists including Elvis Crespo, Charlie Zaa, Victor Manuelle, Huey Dunbar, Robbie Salinas, George Lamond, Son by 4, Obie Bermudez, and Melina Leon. The album kicks off with an infectious group cut, "Celebracion," which features Santiago, Crespo, Salinas, Leon, and Son by 4; it moves into standard duet mode from there, illustrating not only Santiago's own talent but also his good taste in partners. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
