What The Critics Say

One gets the suspicion that Dottie Peoples would respectfully disagree if someone used the term "Contemporary Christian Music" to describe her work in her presence. Unlike the CCM crowd, whose work is basically mainstream pop music with vaguely religious-themed lyrics, Dottie Peoples performs straight-up, full-throated gospel in the Southern black tradition. On her 11th album (not counting compilations), Peoples does dip a toe into CCM's pool with the title track, a dramatic and modern R&B-styled ballad that with secular lyrics could be a smash for the likes of Toni Braxton, and the closing "Thank You," which takes its cues from the slinky funk groove of Sly & the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)." On the other ten tracks, however, this onetime protégée of the great Shirley Caesar stays in the church, delivering one powerful example of old-fashioned gospel after another, alternating between call-and-response rave-ups and more reflective balladry. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

The title of this album depicts what Dottie Peoples does best, and that is deliver unadulterated traditional church-flavored music. Recorded live at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church just outside of Atlanta, GA, Peoples is backed vocally by the combination of Keith Brooks & New Creation, her own Peoples' Choice Chorale, and the New Birth Mass Choir. Former labelmate Byron Cage joins Peoples on the upbeat "It's Gonna Be Alright." Two other tracks guaranteed to keep the toes tapping are the project opener, "Enter His Gates," along with "He Can Work It Out." Noted pastor/recording artist Rev. Jasper Williams, who was very instrumental in introducing Peoples to the industry, also makes a guest appearance on the remake of the age-old gospel favorite "Get Right Church." This is Dottie Peoples at her level best. ~ Tim A. Smith, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

The Gospel Songbird, Dottie Peoples, delivers just what this project's title depicts: hot, slamming, Sunday morning-styled gospel music. This set, which was recorded live at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church just outside of Atlanta, GA, finds Peoples capably backed by the New Creation, the New Birth Missionary Mass Choir, and Peoples' own aggregation, the Peoples Choice Chorale. Noted pastors Bishop Eddie Long and Rev. Jasper Williams Jr. join Peoples on the tracks "I Believe in Christ" and "Get Right Church," respectively. For her contemporary music followers, Peoples offers the upbeat "It's Gonna Be Alright," which was penned by Byron Cage, who is also featured on the track. Another Dottie Peoples classic. ~ Tim Smith, All Music Guide
