If you're only familiar with Doris Troy's fine '60s Atlantic sides (such as "Just One Look"), check out this 1970 hands-across-the-water outing from the Beatles' Apple label. Troy produced (with help from George Harrison) and wrote many of the tunes, achieving the same kind of soulful rock & roll mix that worked so well for Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett with Eric Clapton. In fact, the Bramletts and Clapton join the "dream team" of sidemen (including Harrison, Ringo Starr, Steve Stills, Leon Russell, and Billy Preston) backing Troy, whose trademark gritty but sophisticated delivery lends real weight to the tracks. One of the five bonus CD cuts is her bluesy version of "Get Back," previously issued only as a single in the U.S. This is a well-crafted treat from a gifted singer. ~ Christine Ohlman, Roundup newsletter, All Music Guide
Doris Troy's debut album contains her number ten pop hit "Just One Look," along with an assortment of other fine tracks; seven of the 12 songs are composed by Troy and Gregory Carroll, with Rex Garvin helping on a couple. And while Troy's rendition of "Stormy Weather" won't overwrite the great torch singers' versions, this is still a fine album. Atlantic gave Doris ample input to display her songwriting and warbling skills, but she never had another hit. Sometimes it's best to go with the hot producers and writers. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
