Renaissance: The Masters Series, Vol. 7

What The Critics Say

Having achieved significant success with his first contribution to the Renaissance label's Masters series (Desire), U.K. house DJ Dave Seaman returns with another shot, Renaissance: The Masters Series, Vol. 7, a two-disc mix album that offers a generous program of modern house sounds. There won't be any surprises here for Seaman's fans, but he does demonstrate that there's still plenty of interest to be mined from his signature trippy and dubby brand of house music. He also shows that he's willing to go off the reservation when the spirit moves; in fact, the album's opening number (a Sasha remix of Charlie May's "Seal Clubbing") starts the album off in a crispy breaks mode before things settle into a more typical house-with-dub-effects style. The highlight of the first disc is Thievery Corporation's fun and pop-smart "Heart's a Lonely Hunter," which features vocals by ex-Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. Seaman's own mix of Gabriel & Dresden's "Tracking Treasure Down" is another fine song, featuring vocalist Molly Bancroft. In between there's lots of groovy housecraft, which only very occasionally (as on "For the Time Being" by Phonique) bogs down into by the numbers thumpa-thumpa. Unfortunately, this happens a bit more frequently on disc two, though that disc does offer another surprisingly funky track from Luke Dzierzek & Liousias Present Fling ("Randoms"). Overall, this is a satisfying house mix that won't necessarily win the genre any new converts, but is sure to delight true believers. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Like most DJs, Dave Seaman has peppered the marketplace over the years with an assortment of mix-CDs. But 2005 saw Seaman tie his previous yearly record, as he compiled a total of three mix releases for the techno/dance set: -- Renaissance Presents: The Therapy Sessions, Volume Two, Audio Therapy Presents Across the Boards: Greece, and lastly, This Is Audiotherapy. The latter is a double-disc set, with the first disc being "mixed" and the second disc being "unmixed" (which will come in handy for up-and-coming DJs). Comprised of both brand new mixes and unheard rarities from the archives, Seaman's mixes run the board -- from modern day dance minimalism (Habersham's "Dryspell"), to tracks that have an unmistakable '80s dance flavor (Oliver Moldan's "Maraca$h"). [Note -- Although issued primarily as a double CD, This Is Audiotherapy is also available as a limited-edition 2 x 12" vinyl release.] ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

DJ Dave Seaman's new Therapy company acts as a party host, DJ agency, and record label, with Therapy Sessions being their first major release. There are two distinct mixes here, one that goes for filling the floor and one that goes for freeing the mind. Seaman goes for the slick and upbeat with a heavy dose of tribal. If it wasn't for the lack of wailing divas and the extra helping of dark, rolling bass, Seaman's set is so outgoing it could be mistaken for one by Louie DeVito on a more moody night. Things ramp up smoothly to a stomping finish, but pay close attention to Ernest Saint Laurent's "Do Ya Dub" and its shuffling electro meets handclap disco beat. Taking over on the second disc -- apparently a place where other up-and-coming DJs will be featured in future editions of Therapy Sessions -- newcomer Phil K. starts off abstract, gets spacy, and then lays down some seriously funky breaks. The DJ is in no hurry to get to the beat, but club kids who skip ahead will miss out on all the dark drama Phil K.'s keen sense of pacing brings. Layering Derrick Carter's "Where U At" over Andy Page's "Mr. Rush" makes an already sinister track even scarier, but the slick sounds of the Crystal Method soon follow to bring listeners back to reality. The Crystal Method end up sounding the least fresh out of all the selections here -- and that's including Seaman's disc -- but one fair number to add star power to the track listing is forgivable. A showcase-styled series of all Therapy has to offer, Therapy Sessions is off to a great start. Hopefully, Seaman will keep giving his protégés the freedom to focus on the innovative side of club music. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Saving his best for one of his favorite cities, Dave Seaman turned in a varied set for Global Underground: Melbourne. Beginning with "Soliton Wave" by Our House, Seaman eases into the mix, dropping a few downbeat plates for atmosphere before kicking in with a Roger Sanchez remix of Howie B's "Folk." It's not quite a downtempo mix, but much of it certainly has an air of tranquility that wouldn't have quite made it out on the dancefloor. (Like most in the GU series, this mix was assembled in the studio, though a party "based" on the mix was held at the Good Shed in Melbourne.) Tracks from James Holden and Digital Mind Control set a tone of dark house with just a few nods to trance for the punters out there. Seaman often recalls the brooding ambient techno of early-'90s figures like Psychick Warriors and Robert Leiner, winding up the first disc with a mix of Orbital's "Illuminate." The second set has more of a good-time vibe, beginning with FC Kahuna's acid-by-numbers "Glitterball" and ending nearly an hour later with Tom Middleton's mix of "What Sound" by Lamb and "Slide" by Frakkar. Taking for granted the fact that few mix albums are actually recorded live anymore, Seaman compensated by carefully fashioning an up-tempo mix that works in nearly any context. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
