Clifford Jackson has pitched in on documenting the swinging that is done among the fjords and that is not a reference to the reputation for "free love" that dogs the Swedes. A superb painting by Jackson adorns the cover of a 2002 tribute album to Swedish jazz legend Lars Gullin, organized by reed player Bernt Rosengren. Gullin, who died in 1976, was considered one of the rulers of Scandinavian syncopation. Many of his recordings from the '50s have been reissued as interest in the creations of European jazz artists continues to grow. Jackson has also written liner notes for other Scandinavian releases, establishing his credentials as a journalist and thereby placing him in a state of at least possible awareness of artists on the music scene with a name identical, or similar to, his, including a vocalist, a stride pianist and one of Harry James' sidemen in the '40s. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
