What The Critics Say

Civet spew out pretty standard-issue if high-energy hardcore on their debut album. It's very much in the lineage of Orange County hardcore, though it'll sound a little more novel or fresher to some ears by simple virtue of coming from the mouths of an all-woman band, rather than one of the male lineups that dominate this genre. Liza Graves screams-sings out the lyrics with throaty abandon and an incessantly surly, angry attitude. There ain't no good times to be had on this fast train, the songs vindictively (and sometimes violently) lashing out at leeching older men, broken promises, sellouts, and abusive family. Is it as tough to listen to as it is to read about? Not exactly; the fury seems genuine, and the buzzing ominous chord progressions avoid monotony. You wouldn't want to be trapped with this stuff for more than the half hour or so it takes to play this CD, though. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
