There are a few dozen spots on Cakes Da Killa's first full-length mixtape that are likely to crack you up, but the one that made me actually laugh out loud on a crowded subway platform is the breakdown in "Da Good Book" where he and a female accomplice sing the line "I've been thinking bout dick/ na na na na" in an off key approximation of the melody to Frank Ocean's "Thinkin Bout You".

So what we're a little bit late in discovering Good Call , the third mixtape goodie from NY cover/ mash-up-maticians Telephoned that was originally released waaaaay back in September; all that really matters is that the duo of DJ-producer Sammy Bananas and singer Maggie Horn , currently working on some all-original material, still have that magic touch when it comes to splicing together tunes from opposite ends of the music spectrum into dancefloor ecstasy.

Hip-hop in 2011...hmm. Where former tough guy emcees or rappers of promise were found mostly chatting over Euro-house and eulogising about morning-after apocalypses should anyone not dance the right way (Foreign Beggars can be pardoned for their exploits with a third rate dressing up box), it's hard to describe the year as anything other than 'meh' with a capital M. Forget exciting internet-driven times, again it was up to ears to go digging and discovering away from the dreck and dross.
