you'll have to bear with us during the next few weeks – w/ the avalanche of end of year lists, we're stumbling upon heaps and heaps of fantastic '09 music that we missed the first time around. tune-yards debut album, "BiRd-BrAiNs" dropped way back in April – it's a fuzzy slew of lo-fi sounds, distorted ukulele, scrapes & scratches, and Merril Garbus & her pretty fantastic voice. she's yodeling sometimes, she's humming others, and most of the time it manages to be incredibly beautiful stuff (and that's coming from folks who aren't completely sold on the super lo-fi warbling that's everywhere today!). grab two of our favorite tracks off "BiRd-BrAiNs" below.
