Jonathan Fong, Jonathan Fong Style ( www.jonathanfongstyle.com ) Jonathan Fong calls the wall behind a bed "unused decorating real estate. "Other walls in the bedroom have a closet or windows, but the wall behind your bed is just screaming for you to do something there." Fong, who grew up in Foster City but moved to Southern California to attend UCLA and later start his design business, has written a book on wall treatments and demonstrated his techniques on HGTV. His favorite treatment behind a bed uses fabric squares in tones and shades of white. He takes 30-by-30-inch squares of foam core, tops them with batting and then uses embroidered and beaded fabric interspersed with squares of faux fur. "I love all the different textures of white and the slightly varying shades of white," Fong says. "People have used up to four different fabrics for this treatment, and others have used two. You can really vary it and make it your own." Paul Vincent Wiseman, the Wiseman Group ( www.wisemangroup.com ) "Everyone's bedroom is starting to look like a hotel," says Wiseman, who thinks a wall treatment behind the bed is a clever way to make the space more interesting. For one client's penthouse bedroom, he came up with a smart design that addressed a common problem - an ugly window - using a treatment made from slatted oak that works perfectly with coordinating custom end tables attached to the bed's headboard. "It became a very architectural piece in the room," says Wiseman, who also says that wall treatments work for both contemporary and traditional bedrooms. "It's about comfort and visual interest. It all depends on the budget, style and architecture of the building." And living in earthquake country, you need to take safety into consideration.
