What The Critics Say

On her seventh Christmas collection, songstress Anne Murray croons her way through some of the season's most beloved songs. Released in her 63rd year, Anne Murray's Christmas Album (which features five new recordings and ten previously released tracks) rivals holiday compilations from artists half the Canadian songbird's age. Classic numbers such as "Joy to the World" and "Silver Bells" sound as if they were written with no other artist in mind but Murray. On the latter, the singer, backed by a heavenly vocal choir and a silky orchestra, offers up a delightful reading of an ear-pleasing composition that has become as much a part of Christmas as a glass of eggnog and a fire crackling in the hearth. Murray gets in the holiday spirit as she struts her way through a jangly version of "Winter Wonderland" and later lilts beautifully on a soul-piercing cover of "Silent Night." An aching rendition of "Blue Christmas" finds Murray, in a voice as delicate as freshly fallen snow, warming the listener's heart while she gently breaks it at the same time. Curling piano licks bathed in satiny strings float softly around Murray's vocals. Guests on the album include fellow Canadians Michael Bublé and Diana Krall. ~ Todd Sterling, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

All of Me is a rather peculiar entry in Anne Murray's discography. After releasing I'll Be Seeing You in October of 2004, Straightway essentially reissued it (not even modifying the artwork, save for the title) with a second disc of Anne Murray's greatest hits. Die-hard fans should not be fooled by this attempt to purchase the same album twice, especially if they already own most of the well-known songs courtesy of another greatest-hits compilation. This slight misnomer aside, the first disc finds Murray in excellent form; a smooth collection of standards complete with well-arranged orchestrations that complement her already nearly pitch-perfect voice. The second disc includes some of Murray's finest moments including "Snowbird," "Danny's Song" and "You Needed Me." It's a sensible purchase for those newly initiated to Murray's sound, as they get essentially a two-for-one deal spanning her entire stellar career. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Anne Murray's vocals are like a fine scotch: they just keep getting better as the years go by. This smooth collection of standards is what you would expect from her, with well-arranged orchestrations that complement her already nearly pitch-perfect voice. It's a wonderful set of selections, but not without a bit of melancholy found in each song. I'll Be Seeing You was thematically chosen as a somber but moving tribute to the loss of her close friend Cynthia McReynolds. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Canadian songbird Anne Murray has always had success with her gentle, traditional approach to Christmas and holiday music, and "What a Wonderful Christmas" is no exception. The majority of the songs on this two-CD set are faithful Christmas chestnuts ("Joy to the World," "Away in a Manger," "O Holy Night," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"), with a few lesser-known, non-traditional numbers ("This Season Will Never Grow Old," "Christmas Wishes," "Sweet Little Jesus Boy"). All of the songs are delivered in a warm acoustic setting, with a handful featuring tasteful string and brass sections and a small backing choir. Anne Murray's music always seems most appropriate in the winter, and a collection of holiday songs fits that bill nicely. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Anne Murray's What a Wonderful World: 26 Inspirational Classics is a double-disc set of new and traditional songs like "Amazing Grace," "Lean on Me," "Peace in the Valley," "The Lord's Prayer," and "Let There Be Love," a duet with her daughter, Dawn Lanstroth. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Anne Murray returned to her Canadian hometown in 1997, performing in Nova Scotia for the first time in 29 years. An Intimate Evening with Anne Murray...Live captures that performance, and the results are surprisingly strong. After all these years, Murray remains in strong voice, and she delivers 13 songs, including such favorites as "Danny's Song," "Save the Last Dance for Me" and "You Needed Me." Jann Arden joins her for "Insensitive" and "Snowbird," while Bryan Adams duets on "What Would It Take," and both duets are quite engaging. While the album relies a little too heavily on recent material, condensing a number of favorites to a "Croonin' Medley," it remains a welcome reminder of Murray's way with a song. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
