What The Critics Say

This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran of the world famous El Gran Combo, a crown in the Puerto Rican salsa crown, collaborated with some of the island's new breed of recording stars. Reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, Cheka, and Voltio are just a few who lend their flow to Montañez's new sound, which he calls "salsatón." The tunes are fun and danceable, a great mixture of thick, live sounds and the block-rockin' sound of the drum machines that give reggaeton its steely spine. Though bringing together a well-seasoned, gray-haired salsa vocalist with raw, contemporary talent may seem like a gamble, it seems to have paid off. Salsa con Reggaetón rose to the Top Five of more than one of Billboard's Latin Music charts. Andy Montañez sounds as strong and artful as he ever did. This is one for the books. ~ Evan C. What The Critics Say

There have been big changes in the Latin charts recently. Merengue no longer dominates. Nor do the old heavies or newcomers. What sells now is a rethink of classic salsa by musicians who have been sweating in other groups for years before blossoming: like Montanez, once El Gran Combo's lead singer. How are these musicians like him doing it? With a mix of freshness and chops. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

Ismael Miranda and Andy Montanez collaborated for the second time on this romantic effort, which is different for the singers' respective careers. They are not foreign to boleros (they have recorded them throughout their careers) and they have made judicious selections in order to be at the top of the game without outdoing each other. Veteran arrangers Maximo Torres and Mandy Vizoso understand the bolero medium to the hilt, as they provide the right framework for this very interesting repertoire; "Niebla Del Recuerdo," "Porcentaje," "Adán y Eva," "Pobre Gaviota," and "Si No Eres Tú" have a shattering effect. This is music done with simple elegance and great taste by two master performers. Extraordinary on every level. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr., All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

The early '80s were pretty slim years for this vocalist in his first solo efforts. It would be a matter of time before the singer could be admired in his own right. "Querube" (by Pedro Flores), "La China de Oriente," and "Barandas" are interesting pieces that may be overshadowed by latter, more broadcasted hits. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr., All Music Guide

What The Critics Say

This early-'90s Andy Montañez release may not have received much consideration as far as radio coverage; the best-promoted tune was "Larga Distancia" (by Charlie Donato). However, the rest of the material is quite good, showcasing Montañez's powerful voice. "Jugando Al Esconder," "Canto lo Que Siento," "Engreido de Amor," and "Bomba con Sabor" could use a second hearing. Montañez, as usual, is faultless; his traveling band, led by trumpet player Fernando Marcano, comes into play here. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr., All Music Guide
