What the Critics Say

A long, if not very definitive, compilation of Keen sides from the four years Cooke recorded with them before switching to RCA. Many of Cooke's lesser-known singles are included here, such as "There I've Said It Again" and "T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness." Cooke's Keen years were marked with a search for a particular style, through gospel and Nat King Cole-esque crooning, to the birth of soul. Partly this was Cooke's journey, partly this was his managers and the heads of Keen trying to find a way to market the man who hit hit big with "You Send Me." But Cooke could make gold out of most material -- listen to how he takes on a showtune like "Ol' Man River" and makes it swing. The CD itself sounds fine, with little hiss or distortion. Until the legalities of Cooke's catalog are sorted out, and a proper series of albums are released, CDs such as this from Charly are your best bets. ~ Ted Mills, All Music Guide
