What the Critics Say
This video is part of the Classic Albums documentary series, zeroing in on the making and realization of the Who's 1971 recording Who's Next. It does the usual thorough and enjoyable job that one expects from the producers of this series, employing interviews, about a quarter-century after the release of the record, with many of the principals. Those include all of the members of the Who from that time, except the late Keith Moon; producer Glyn Johns; and co-manager Chris Stamp. The confusing genesis of the project as the concept album Lifehouse is worked through, as well of explanations of how and why the concept was abandoned (mostly because no one could understand what Pete Townshend was getting at), with many of the songs salvaged for a straightforward hard rock album. The vintage performance clips of the Who during some of the album's material are a bit disappointing, though. Many of these are taken from a show done about six years after the album was made, and there are surely better ones available (and ones that show Moon in better shape in particular). ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
