What the Critics Say
Alternately brilliantly inspired and brilliantly confused, Busta Rhymes' second album, When Disaster Strikes, isn't perfect, but it's considerably more creative than the bulk of contemporary hip-hop albums. Using the Wu-Tang Clan's haunting soundscapes as a blueprint, Busta Rhymes expands that formula, adding funkier beats and elements of electronica and electric funk. It's a forward-thinking mix, pointing the way to new hip-hop fusions, even when the music falls flat. Busta's lyrics remain startlingly fresh and compelling, and they're given more weight by these dense rhythm tracks. Not everything on When Disaster Strikes is successful, partially because the album runs too long, but the best cuts confirm that Busta Rhymes is a singular talent. [When Disaster Strikes was released in an edited version with all of the profanity removed.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
