What the Critics Say

When Sylvester Stallone agreed to star in the 1981 World War II-era soccer drama Victory, it was only natural that Bill Conti signed on to compose its score. After all, the two men previously enjoyed success collaborating on another sports-themed feature, a little boxing film called Rocky. Conti's work here is both inspired and inspirational, evoking classic scores like Elmer Bernstein's The Great Escape with its dramatic melodies and militaristic rhythms. By turns rousing and bleak, the music carefully underscores the connections between the battlefield and the playing field, capturing their common drive for conquest. Prometheus' limited-edition set (Victory's first-ever official release) includes a handful of alternate cues, including different versions of "Let's Go Guys" and "Match's Revenge." ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
